31st May 2007 - University of Northampton (Park Campus), 7.30pm,

From Virtual Communities to Virtual Enterprises: A Business Perspective.

Event Summary.
Brendan's talk was entertaining and informing, it was fascinating to see how much research has been carried out regarding types of social networking, and how for example big Football Clubs are mainly interested in Sales, rather than interaction with the fans.

For those of us who don't happen to have stumbled across virtual worlds such as Noah's Ark and Second Life, the presentation gave us a new perspective. There was a prize for the competition winner of a BCS Memory Stick, for answering the question "What is the exchange rate Linden Dollar to US Dollar?". After the presentation a Healthy discussion took place, involving both BCS members and non members alike.

The committee would like to thank Brendan for speaking.

The presentation will be provided by our outgoing Chairman:
Dr Brendan D'Cruz, Business School, University of East London.

Synopsis.
In recent years there has been an explosion in the use of 'virtual' activities, communities and environments, and many organisations are already making significant use of the Internet for business and commercial purposes.
This goes well beyond traditional E-Commerce and E-Business, and owes much to the emergence of Web 2.0 and social networking technologies coupled with advances in bandwidth capability and multimedia tools.

Environments such as Linden Lab's 'Second Life' have been populated by millions of virtual residents in the form of avatars and user-generated content with a blossoming virtual economy and numerous opportunities for
social and business enterprises. There are however constraints and consequences, and implications for a number of professions.

This presentation will focus on a range of contexts and case studies that include sport, religion, political expression and online games, showing how these have and could develop in order to meet the needs of range of
community types, and therefore enhance the business potential of cyberspace.
